Excursion - Lusterfjorden

The trip starts by ferry from Solvorn to Ornes. Here you will find Urnes Stavkirke, the eldest of the remaining Stave Churches. The Church was built in around 1130, and is idyllically situated, with a beautiful view over the sea. The décor in the Church is unique, and the heathen animal ornamentation was often called the Urnes Style. This is the only Norwegian Stave Church on Unesco's World Heritage List. Urnes is called the Queen of Stave Churches.

Tidemand & Gude, Fearnley, Flintoe and I.C. Dahl are all famous artists who met and found inspiration in Luster. In the hamlet of Kroken, you will find the beautiful old building Munthehuset, which was raised in 1792. The art lover and historian, Gerhard Munthe made the area an active centre of culture in the 1800's.

Munthehuset is open to visitors, and if you are in the mood you may rent a kayak.

Continuing on, drive up Sognafjellet (Sogn Mountain). Jotunheimen is one of the best-known and impressive mountain ranges in Norway. The Jotunheimen National Park was established in 1980. Large areas of the park lie in Luster. Here you will find magnificent views of the high majestic peaks of the Hurrungane in Western-Jotunheimen, with 24 of the peaks soaring to more than 2000 metres. Trips to among other peaks Store Skagastølstind can be arranged by contacting Turtagrø Hotell.
