Tungestølen - Austerdalsbreen
"The finest ice-scenery in Europe", said the English mountaineer William Cecil Slingsby about the three, wild glaciers Loke-, Odin- and Torsbreen, all of which plunge down from Jostedalsbreen at the head of Austerdalsbreen. A small taste of the wild glacial landscape can be had without necessarily walking on the glacier itself.
The starting point for the hike is Tungestølen, the tourist hut at the head of Veitastrond. The trail continues ahead just over the bridge, is well marked and easy to find. It follows the west side of the Austerdalselva all the way to the glacier. It is almost flat all the way, with a few occasional bends. As always with glaciers, you must be very careful and not go too close to the ice. Ice slides and calving can occur without warning, so keep a good distance. The most dominant landscape element is moraine ridges.
Normal walking time is about 2 hours.
